Connecting Remotely to Shared Hosting Databases

To connect remotely to a database, you must create a database and enable direct database access. If a database was created without this option selected, you will not be able to connect remotely.
For more information on creating a database with direct database access, see Setting up a MySQL or SQL Server Database for Your Hosting Account
To use Direct Database Access to connect remotely to your shared hosting database, you need to download software that lets you connect to the database and manage it.
NOTE: Direct Database Access is not available on free ad-supported hosting accounts. To upgrade your hosting account, see Upgrading Your Hosting Account.
Some popular database management applications are:
After downloading and installing one of these clients, you can use it to connect to your database. These are your connection settings:
- Host Name or Server
- The name of the server your database is stored on. Don’t know what this is? See Locating Your Database’s Host Name for more information.
- Port
- If asked for the port, enter the following:
- MySQL: 3306
- MSSQL: 1433
- User Name
- The database’s user name.
- Password
- The database’s password. The password is created when the database is first set up but can be changed at any time.
- Database
- The database you want to connect to.
NOTE: You can log in to your hosting account manager to find the hostname, user name, and password for your database.

To connect remotely to a database, you must create a database and enable direct database access. If a database was created without this option selected, you will not be able to connect remotely.

To use Direct Database Access to connect remotely to your shared hosting database, you need to download software that lets you connect to the database and manage it.

Reinstalling the Default Scripts Directory on Windows Shared Hosting

There are two form mailers on Windows shared hosting: gdform.php and webformmailer.asp. Reinstalling updates your hosting account’s scripts directory with the latest version of gdform.php.
Webformmailer.asp is accessed through a virtual directory and is not updated when you reinstall the scripts directory. You cannot modify webformmailer.asp.
NOTE: As of October 29th, 2008, gdform.asp is no longer offered on Windows shared hosting accounts. Reinstalling default scripts will not remove or modify an existing gdform.asp.
WARNING: Gdform.asp cannot be recovered if it is deleted.
To Reinstall the Default Directory to Your Hosting Account
- Log in to your Account Manager.
- From the Products section, click Web Hosting.
- Next to the hosting account you want to use, click Launch.
- In the Content section of the Hosting Control Center, click the Form Mail icon.
- Select the Reinstall Default Scripts Directory box.
- Click Continue.
Gdform.php will be reinstalled. This process may take up to 15 minutes to complete.

All of our hosting accounts come with a Web statistics package.
Set up Your Hosting Statistics
- Log in to your Account Manager.
- From the Products section, click Web Hosting.
- Next to the hosting account you want to use, click Launch.
- Open Statistics, then select Configure Web Statistics.
- Click Enable Web Statistics.
Your stats account will be configured with your FTP username and password.

How can I log in as root on my virtual dedicated server?

You cannot log in to your virtual dedicated server remotely using “root.” If you need “root” access on your virtual dedicated server, use the su – command once you have logged in with your User ID.
The su (short for substitute user) command makes it possible to log in as root temporarily while you are logged in with your normal User ID.
To use su to log in as “root,” type:
su –
Your root password is the same as the password for your normal User ID.
